A TYPICAL SCENARIO FOR BREAST RECONSTRUCTION WITH BODY OWN TISSUE (FREE FLAP)
Initial consultation with dr. Zorman should be scheduled at least 4 weeks before the desired date of the procedure.
Day 1 (Surgery): Admittance to the clinic, a final pre-op appointment with Dr. Zorman and your anaesthesiologist, additional pre-op examinations and diagnostics performed.
Surgery usually starts around 16 h and last 3-4 hours. You will wake up from surgery with a compression garment for the donor area, a special bra, and compression stockings used to prevent vein thrombosis. There will be some drains in the donor area and reconstructed breast. Flap(s) will be monitored hourly to detect any changes in blood perfusion.
Day 2: You will be given intravenous medications and fluids for a safe and painless recovery. Additionally, low molecular weight heparin is given subcutaneously. You will start walking short distances with the help of physiotherapists.
Day 3: Depending on the amount of accumulated fluid drains are usually removed, and you will start taking medications by mouth. You will get out of bed couple of times per day to walk around for 10-15 minutes.
Day 4-5: You will be able to take care of yourself. All drains and intravenous line are removed. You will still have to take painkillers and subcutaneous injections to prevent venous thrombosis.
Day 6-7: You will take a shower and wound dressing will be replaced. Dr. Zorman will see you before returning home, and detailed instructions for postoperative care will be given. Do keep in mind, however, that you will need assistance with luggage, as you must avoid lifting heavy objects or other activities requiring similar exertion.
Post-op consultations and additional procedures are scheduled individually according to patients needs and desires. When you are ready to return home, we will want to know how you are doing. We encourage you to keep in touch with our office and periodically update with your progress. As with all of our patients, we ask that you call or email us with questions or needs as they arise. We also ask that you send us periodic photos (via SMS, or email) so that your progress can be visually seen.
